Spring success

This Spring has been great for our new, younger members, many of whom qualified for the British Youth Championships held in the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Going to a national competition for the first time is an eye opener and demands additional competition skills to those needed for smaller events. Moments of brilliance were produced by all the fencers, balanced by a few change of tactics in the heat of the moment, resulting in points and places lost.

Overall though it was fabulously solid start for many and both coaches were really proud of progress and enjoyed supporting all the fencers.

For Jess S it was her last time competing at the BYC’s in the U18’s. She had a close DE in the last 8, going hit for hit against another girl on the international squad; she missed out on getting a bronze medal by one hit.

Last month also saw Jemima C competing at the Barcelona Cup. Ranking number one after the fencing round, she was in a strong place enabling her to go on and win a gold medal in the U17 pentathlon. Congratulations to her and we look forward to more multi-sport adventures this summer.

Training

More training days are coming up soon and for those interested in summer camps there is still time to book in to our recommend Bocholt International Fencing Camp in Germany, or the UK based one in Truro, Cornwall. Also if you enjoy multi sports, Leweston Pentathlon have their annual summer camp where fencing, swimming, running, laser shooting and trips to run and swim in the sea at Weymouth are time tabled for a really fun week in August.

If anyone has friends who might like to give fencing a go, don’t forget they get a free taster session.

Once they have had their session they need to sign up for a free 90 membership with British Fencing. It provides the insurance they need to participate.
It is open to people who fence at a BF affiliated club in the UK, are new to fencing, and have never held a BF membership before.

Fencing in schools – Centurion is on the march!

Centurion Swords is now getting fencing onto the curriculum at St Marks, as well as other schools in the area, in a new collaboration with British Fencing. If you know of a school that would love to have something different as part of their sporting offering get in touch with Sandra and she can pass on the information.
